Not all days can be claimed to be magical whilst being away on holiday.
Whether it's the heat, the fact that I start turning back homeward tomorrow, or the "hump day" arriving a day or two late, today was feeling meh.
I needed a good breakfast. Luckily the bakery was able to provide one.
Eggs benedict with the bacon option. My favourite. |
I hadn't seen much of Ceduna so I put my mind to at least having a good look around.
They have a long pier. All towns along the coast in South Australia have long piers. So I shouldn't have been surprised.
Here is the view from the start of the pier.
Here is the view of the town after walking to the end of that pier.
Thevenard is an outer suburb of Ceduna, though I see it online being described as a seaprate town. I had a look over there.
It has its own pier, as well as some pretty big grain silos. So far no big surprise.
There was also some large mounds of white stuff. I took a closer look.
This stuff is salt. The company with this salt is Cheetham. This could be the stuff you sprinkle on your eggs.
On the other side of the water was Denial Bay. I visited that as well.
It also had its own pier.
When Matthew Flinders first sailed here in the early 1800's he failed to find any running water, marking this place as inhospitable for settlement. He marked it on the map as Denial, meaning denial of water. I guess there comes a time when it become very hard to name places, and you resort to whatever comes to mind.
Trivia question time:
Which famous fast food outlet can be found just before the start of the Nullarbor?
The burgers are better. |
Maybe next time. |
Ceduna doesn't feel like a tourist town. Its many industries start early in the morning, before good tourists want to get up. It also seems to serve as the last main town before crossing Nullabor and in to Western Australia. I am glad to mark it off my list of places to see, but probably won't rush back unless it's to pass through to Perth.
Heading back tomorrow. Slowly.
PIE REVIEW
Although they have limited competition, the Ceduna Bakery makes some tasty stuff. Apart from breakfasts they have a decent selection of pies, pasties and sausage rolls.
The pie chose today was plain chicken pie.
I am going to praise this highly as I was not expecting anything great this far out and it would be fair to say that this exceeded expectations. At $5.50 this also came in as the cheapest pie so far on this trip. So cheap. Way too cheap. If I was advising them my first suggestion would be to immediately raise all pie prices by 20%.At this point in time here is my ranking of all pies tried so far:
- Meningie Bakery Tomato, Bacon and Mince
- Elliston Bakery Standard
- Ardrossan Bakery Sausage Roll (Yes, it's not a pie. Get over it)
- Rabbit Warren Bakery Guinness
- Yankallila Bakery Chicken and Mushroom
- Bakery (Kingston SE) Pepper
- Rabbit Warren Bakery Tomato, Onion and Mince
- Ceduna Bakery Chicken
- Sassy's Cafe Curry
- Buninyong Hawaiian
- Ok Pie Shop Pizza
Podcast of the Day: The Rest is History: America in '68: Nixon's Great Comeback.
- Hosts Tom Holland (no, not that one) and Dominic Sandbrook make history really interesting. And they know their stuff as well!

* I have just realised I have been misspelling this. In my defence my spell checker uses American English.
